Basically, if you aren’t out practicing at your leisure, how do you ever expect to improve and evolve?! I’m a very firm believer in traveling outside ones comfort zone {I may be a believer in anything having to do with ‘travel’…} and jumped at the opportunity to join 13 other photographers in a workshop with Fer Juaristi in Des Moines a few weeks ago. For an entire day, Fer explained {in complete fabulous accent} how to see beyond what was right in front of you and using any type of light to your advantage.

Education in your craft is key. I won’t get on a soapbox about it {well, not today anyway!}, but I will say that it is absolutely essential to experiment and work out new theories and concepts. In photography and in life. Pull motivation from areas that may not necessarily be of usual interest. Take inspiration from everyday life. See moments as a possibility for movement and learning.

The simple concepts that Fer illustrated to us through his camera will very likely stay with me forever. They were not ground-breaking nor extensively presented, but gently offered to us to take or leave at our own digression. We’re all different; we all do business differently, we all shoot differently, we all react differently. He got that. He made it a point to say that everything we, as photographers, do, represents who we are and where we came from. Always be yourself and shoot what you love–and the rest will come. Keep it simple and for the love of all things, there is more to life than 1.2!

{I hope you enjoy a few of my favs from the workshop…these two had recently gotten married and came in just to play with us. There was no professional hair, makeup, or stylists of any kind–just photographers, two subjects and an ample amount of warehouse space. How much more simple can you get!?}

Even though I was apparently somewhat delirious by an oncoming intense head-cold, Ethan, his mom and I had a fun sunny afternoon session first at the house where he grew up then across town at his grandparent’s farmstead. Congrats, Ethan, and good luck at DCTC!!!!

Miss Kenley Grace was my first baby to enroll in my Sweet Baby Program and now she’s already graduated!! What a cutie–it was so fun getting to see her every three months during her first year {and her parents and sweet puppy, too!}. It’s positively rewarding to watch these little ones grow and learn and capture those special moments for years to come. We photographed these two days before her first birthday–her mom is super creative and does such an awesome job decorating {if she ever decided to leave teaching, she’d have a great backup!}…happy birthday Miss KG!!!!

All 1-year sessions in the Sweet Baby Package conclude with a fantabulous Cake Smash.

A great way to make life standstill if even for a few nanoseconds. Anything goes in this type of shoot–it’s so relaxed and fun!!! Holly, Betsy, Jackie, Lindsey and Alyssa wanted to do a friends shoot, so we set out for the county, camera in hand, and played.

Oh, and we may have laughed.

Like…alot.

Emily was so cute and excited! Their baby’s room was decorated in the brightest of greens and yellows, complete with Pound Puppies, Pooh, and all things vintage {throw back to when we were kids–love it!}, which made it so fun to photograph. I think it’s super fun when the couple decides to keep the ‘arrival’ a surprise–can’t wait to see if it’s a boy or a girl!

Oh, to see the world through that child’s eyes…

One of the biggest perks of being an on-location photographer is that I get to capture the baby in their complete environment, utilizing their toys, blankets, books, {mom’s heels!}, cribs, changing tables, dressers, rooms, hallways….this always makes for more personalized and more meaningful images and I am so thankful to my clients for letting me into their homes {and letting me be so nosy!} to experiment and play. ‘Cause that’s what every session is about to me: experimentation and playing. Trying new angles, ideas and techniques and having a good time doing it!!!

I {heart} this job!!!

Mr. Nick doesn’t even flinch as I’m nearly bouncing off the walls {and only after two cups of coffee, mind you!} with anticipation and determination. It’s a whole new season which brings new goals, new couples, new love and new life into my business and I’m positively loving it. I feel like nothing can bring me down {here that, lord of the rains? Nothing!} It’s bright, it’s cloudy, it will not rain, it’s a comfortable 68 degrees; it’s a perfect day to photograph a wedding!!

On that note, why not start the day with a little engagement session love?! Sam and Adam will be getting married this August and I am totally diggin’ their laid-back farm-style engagement session. And, honestly, how sweet is little Dev?? There were so many of my favorites, I had a hard time narrowing them down for the blog!! This summer is going to be the absolute best!!!!!!

Let me tell you how sorely disappointed I will be if this incoming storm system that everyone is talking about ends up dissipating into a few measly drops of precipitation. I mean, bring on the thunder, the lightening and all the storm drama that I love!!! On the downside, I guess we have a ‘real’ lawn now and will need to eventually tend to all the busted limbs and branches that good storms leave behind, so…? Hm. Something to ponder.

In other news–another senior!!! Yay, my seniors this year were so fun, creative, lively, funny and just all around great people. I hope to run into each of them now and then and hear stories about their lives and families as they grow into the amazing people I know they will be! Sam’s session took place at their family farm (same as his cousin John!) and an old country bridge on a beautiful spring afternoon where we found some fabulous light (which he kept laughing at me for exclaiming things like that!) and some super awesome smiles–what a cutie! ;-)
