Photographing a birth…is there anything more real?

The birth photography industry is positively exploding right now and I, for one, am very grateful to be even a tiny part of it. I have witnessed seven births and would love to be a part of so many more. Midnight phone calls, long {sometimes short!} hours, waiting, shooting, pacing, shooting, laughing, experiencing…shooting. It’s all about documenting the natural, small moments to preserve this little human’s coming into the world. It’s heart-pulling, honest, genuine, loving, terrifying, soul-quenching, gratifying and the utmost powerful show of pure, easy love that I have ever come across.

And I love it so much.

The birth of Mr. Silas Alvin was a beautiful thing. What a way to cap a fabulous year…I got the call in the wee-hours of the morning; they were already at the hospital, she was in active labor…basically, they were waiting for me. Unlike their daughter Zaria’s birth two years earlier when we all walked the halls, joked for hours, breathed through the pain {that was mostly Erica, not Billy and me}…Silas was ready; he was not going to wait. I arrived slightly before 6am and this wonderful little man joined us at 6:40am.
